In December 1944, at the height of WW2 and thinking the Germans were on the run, they totally shocked the world by amassing their Army and attacking, surrounding the French Town of Bastogne. Much is made of the fact that FDR was a Democrat leading us through WW2, but if you look back, the party was very different than today. Imagine how WW2 may have gone had he faced the massive onslaught of opposition President Bush faces today in executing the War on Terror, especially the Battles in Iraq.
I have often related the BATTLE OF THE BULGE to Tet of ‘68 in Viet Nam. Both battles saw us caught by surprise and through strength of determination and will, push back our enemy and defeat them. That we defeated the North Vietnamese is a fact lost on the public, thanks in large part to the efforts of the anti-war left and news commentator, Walter Cronkite.
I've always felt that it was Patton's “Drive Like Hell” push through to Bastogne that saved the day, that and the courage and determination of those trapped there.
WW2 was indeed a great war in scope and determination. I fear that today, we are faced with the same sort of enemy and that he has learned our weak spots and is attacking us there, much like the Communist North Vietnamese did.
The Battle of the Bulge and Tet of '68 should teach us a lesson, when compared side by side. We need to return to the time we were determined to win, not negotiate with an enemy to be "fair."

I completely agree with you about the way people are today. I don't understand it. You must defeat your enemy. That's what you do to win.
My moment of disbelief started with the news reports of a "disproportionate response" from Israel. That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of. It’s a war. You win a war by killing more of the enemy than they kill of you. If two kids are fighting on the playground and one hits the other, you don't tell one just hit to try and calculate the correct response. It's absurd!
I don't understand where all of these "hate the United States" reporters came from. All throughout history there have been people that didn't agree about social issues that could agree when we were attacked. Now is seems that people are so caught up in their own stupid game that they forget there are people that still want to kill us. That is why we have the worlds most advanced military. People have always wanted to bring down the U.S. because we represent everything other countries don’t. We represent what life could be like for all those people living in underdeveloped countries; which of course are kept underdeveloped by their leaders.
When I was a little kid I loved going to air shows, "Top Gun" was the best movie ever made, and people were different. I want to know where everyone went. I have heard people older than me tell me they are glad that they grew during the time period they did, because now it’s nothing like that. I’m not very old, but I know where they are coming from. There was no political correctness when I was a kid. That sort of thing was laughable. Now it’s law.

You would think the world learned a lesson from Neville Chamberlain's failed attempts at diplomacy with Hitler. Even he admitted the error of his way and supported Churchill in executing WW2 to Victory.
I was born in 1948, grew up through the 50's and everyone was proud of WW2. TV was new, but filled with stories of heroism and accomplishments during the war. We had TV shows like "Navy Log" and "Victory at Sea" showing us actual footage of the war and the victorious ending.
Movies, many repeated from during the war, showed heroism of the troops, no one worried about offending the "enemy." Everything was to defeat them.
Studying the war, Roosevelt, a Democrat, had full support from the Republicans, even during the 1944 campaign.
Even into the turbulent 60's, we had a TV show, "Combat" about WW2 and the exploits of an Infantry Squad. I even had the pleasure of meeting the star of the show, Rick Jason, as I was about to leave Viet Nam late in 1970.
As I see and listen to the opposition coming from many today, I worry for the country. Then I see comments from our troops and others, as yourself, who can see the fallacy of the left and the harm they bring our country, and I feel we will turn out alright, once your generation reaches the age to take over from the wimps that fill my generation.
