Pelosi Upset Over Veto of Retreat Funding Bill

May 1, 2007

As expected, the Democrats ill-fated bill with so much pork attached and calling for yet another retreat for our Brave Troops when they are winning has the Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, in a tither. In an email received just this evening, she vents her feigned frustrations. Of course we realize it is feigned, as the entire world knew long ago this bill would be vetoed, as it should be. Some excerpts from the email (the entire email will be posted at the end under comments).

“I had hoped that President Bush would accept my offer to work together on a New Direction in Iraq and sign crucial legislation holding the Iraqi government accountable.”

Ms. Pelosi, I don’t think it is your call for the President to “work with you.” We are at war and under the constitution, which you also swore an oath to uphold, “Commander in Chief” of the Military is granted him, not Congress. It is upon you and the rest of Congress to work with him.

You claim this farce would “hold the Iraqi government accountable,” but you don’t mention it telegraphs to our enemies the date of our surrender, winning or not. You also don’t mention how it is laden with billions of dollars of non-emergency spending totally unrelated to the War on Terror.

Ms. Pelosi, you may dispense with the “New Direction in Iraq” canard any time. Any thinking person knows what you really mean is a “New Direction AWAY from Iraq.”

If you and the rest of your Democrat cauldron of leftists really wanted a “New Direction,” you would have sat down with the President long ago and together devised a plan to lead our Forces to Victory against terror. Instead, every thing you recommend is the same old ‘cut and run’ that saw defeat snatched from Victory as far back as Viet Nam.

“The President isn't listening to the American people's call to end this disastrous war.”

No, Ms Pelosi, he is listening to the Generals. Especially the General your Democrat led Senate voted unanimously to Command our efforts in Iraq. Why is it the Democrat party voted unanimously for General Petraeus, yet now denies him the very tools he said is needed?

“The President vetoed our bill that would end this war and bring our troops home the week of the fourth anniversary of his infamous "Mission Accomplished" speech that declared an end to major combat operations in Iraq.”

Is it coincidental that the Democrat party chose this particular date? I think not. You Democrats seem to place a lot of stock in the infamous ‘Mission Accomplished’ banner signifying the successful completion of the USS Abraham Lincoln’s longest cruise. Let’s take a look at portions of that speech.

“The transition from dictatorship to democracy will take time, but it is worth every effort. Our coalition will stay until our work is done. Then we will leave, and we will leave behind a free Iraq.”

“Our mission continues. Al Qaeda is wounded, not destroyed. The scattered cells of the terrorist network still operate in many nations, and we know from daily intelligence that they continue to plot against free people.”

“The war on terror is not over; yet it is not endless. We do not know the day of final victory, but we have seen the turning of the tide. No act of the terrorists will change our purpose, or weaken our resolve, or alter their fate. Their cause is lost. Free nations will press on to victory.” (Unless Democrats are seated in power).

Bush didn’t announce a cessation of hostilities. Nor did he order the ‘Mission Accomplished’ banner. The Navy did. Yet, Democrats want to play it up as if he did, all to lull America back to sleep so they can bring about our defeat again and grab more power.

“Our bill achieved exactly what the American people elected us to do in November 2006. It would have fully funded troops on the ground, started to bring them home responsibly, held President Bush accountable, and ensured our veterans get the treatment they deserve back home.”

No, Ms. Pelosi. It would have achieved exactly what you and the rest of your Democrat ilk desire. Bring about failure while Bush is still in office. That isn’t what the American people voted for at all. An honest cross section of America, not cooked polls, shows we want to win and stop terror over there, not end up fighting them here.

The only funding you offer is for retreat when they are winning.

You cry about Bush being held responsible, but who holds you responsible for drafting, passing and sending this bill knowing it was laced with all the unnecessary spending, ripping the rug out from under the Troops and your ignoring call of our Troops for support for their mission? Who is holding fellow Democrat Harry Reid responsible for his “cry of fire in a crowded theater” remark of the War is Lost?

Remarkable that you have the unmitigated gall to state “ensured our veterans get the treatment they deserve” when of all the pork you packed the bill with, not one single dime was for Veterans care!

“Congress has responded to the will of the American people.”

No ma’am, you have responded to the will of George Soros’ Moveon.org, DailyKOS and other far leftist groups bent on destroying America, as we know it.

“Close to 60,000 of you signed the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC)'s petition to the President telling him not to veto our plan.”

60,000? That’s all? I thought you said you had the “will of the people” on your side? With our population numbering a little over 300,000,000 now, that makes your support base about .0002% of the population. Not as much support as claimed, it appears.

And now, the actual purpose of this email;

“We are counting on you -- and millions of Democrats across the country who are united and energized as never before -- to help build an unstoppable Democratic Majority and put a Democrat in the White House in 2008.”

It is all about campaigning to set Democrats in permanent power over the rest of us. As said before, it is a subtle and mostly silent coup d'état to ensure the new Democrat party’s Socialistic dream of rebuilding the failed Soviet Union comes about.

Don’t fall for this drivel from the Democrat party. The war in Iraq, part of the over all Greater War on Terror is real and ongoing. It is not a political stunt nor are our Troops political footballs for the Democrats to use and sacrifice at will for power.

If we fail in Iraq, we will fail in Afghanistan and anywhere else terrorism rears it’s ugly head. Osama Bin Laden proclaimed us as ‘paper tigers’ when we tucked tail and ran from Somalia. He desires the destruction of America and Western Culture. He has declared Iraq the Central Front in the War on Terror.

Democrats are handing them a Victory on a silver platter.

As promised, the entire text of the email received this evening;

Dear Lewis,

Voice Your Outrage and Visit the Iraq Resource Center

I had hoped that President Bush would accept my offer to work together on a New Direction in Iraq and sign crucial legislation holding the Iraqi government accountable. Instead, the President chose to continue to isolate himself from Congress, the international community, and the American people by vetoing the Democratic plan for change in Iraq.

The President isn't listening to the American people's call to end this disastrous war. What further proof do they need than the timing of his veto? The President vetoed our bill that would end this war and bring our troops home the week of the fourth anniversary of his infamous "Mission Accomplished" speech that declared an end to major combat operations in Iraq. Four years after that misguided speech, the President keeps making the same mistakes in Iraq.

Our bill achieved exactly what the American people elected us to do in November 2006. It would have fully funded troops on the ground, started to bring them home responsibly, held President Bush accountable, and ensured our veterans get the treatment they deserve back home.

Congress has responded to the will of the American people. President Bush has not. The President is clinging to his failed stay-the-course strategy in Iraq, while brave servicemen and women risk their lives for his mistakes.

House and Senate Democrats offered a plan for change in Iraq that gave the President every penny he requested for soldiers on the ground and more. But it also gave him something he's tried to avoid: accountability.

President Bush may have the bully pulpit - but we have you. Close to 60,000 of you signed the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC)'s petition to the President telling him not to veto our plan. The American people are with us and the fight for a New Direction in Iraq is not over - we hope you will continue to stand with us.

We are counting on you -- and millions of Democrats across the country who are united and energized as never before -- to help build an unstoppable Democratic Majority and put a Democrat in the White House in 2008.

Thank you for your continued dedication.

Sincerely,

Nancy Pelosi
Speaker of the House of Representatives

P.S. In just our first 100 days, Democrats have already taken America in a New Direction. Our Democratic Majority has passed legislation to raise the minimum wage and expand federal stem cell research, and has held over 100 oversight hearings on Iraq. Together, I know we can do even more. Click here to visit our Iraq Resource Center to voice your outrage at the President's insistence on ignoring the will of the American people.

Bin Laden and his ilk have the patience to wait for the President's term to end - then, we could be in for a world of ugly and it will be "Bush's fault"

Flag gazer, we are in for a world of ugly no matter what. That is why we need leaders with the guts and gumption to fight back, not roll over and apologize and give the store away.

Gone are the Democrats like Lieberman and Zell Miller.

Pelosi should be fired and tried for TREASON. she gave comfort to the enemy in time of war.

Lew,
I like that cartoon a lot.

If the D's really wanted the bill to pass, would they have really attached the pork?

Think about it,
Is this just a stupid politics game to insult the intelligence of their supporters?
Is this a move to look like they are pressuring the President to end the war, while behind the scenes wanting it to continue?
Maybe they even want to win it, and realize it will take more time than their supporters will be happy with.
Is there information out there that they can NOT share with the public, for security reasons, that is driving their real views (not to be confused with those they express publicly)?

Bob, I think your statement is ridiculous. Calling anything she has said treasonous just blurs the line between free speech and treason even further (and it is already somewhat blurry).
Inhibiting people from speaking their views, even if those views are very anti the mission of the military, is anti the very values this country has that I see worth fighting and sacrificing for.
It is best to let people speak as they really feel, and the rest of us listen using critical analysis to sort the crap from the truth.
I realize that the ridiculous spin used by politicians (and advertisers of all sorts of things) makes our job, of sorting out the truth, much harder than it should be.

Maybe when we vote, we should pick the candidate with the least mis-leading spin in their advertising.

Coboble, for some insight into what is going on within the Democrat party, and even some within the Republican party, read this New York Times article, Antiwar Groups Use New Clout to Influence Democrats on Iraq.

That the New York Times, of all news sources, openly allowed this blatant admission, simply amazes me.
